LAI’s proven team of engineers and technicians understands how to harness the effectiveness of CO2 and Nd:YAG laser machining to reduce your manufacturing costs. Multiple-head, high-speed laser positioning systems offer cost-effective solutions for your short-run or high-volume manufacturing needs. We offer laser machining using from 30 to 5,000 watts of power and advanced material processing for a variety of high-temperature alloys.

Our processes include conventional laser cutting, laser cutting of thin materials, laser clean cutting, five-axis laser machining, laser heat-treating, laser hole-drilling, laser drilling of composites, laser machining of tubes and pipes, laser profile machining and laser welding.

Laser Cutting

A five-axis laser machining center precision processes a ring used in a power-generation turbine.

LAI custom CO2 and Nd:YAG laser work stations can solve any complex laser cutting task. Our proven team of engineers and technicians understands how to harness the effectiveness of laser cutting and drilling to reduce manufacturing costs.

Precision vision systems offer exact registration from features, cross hair or any defined edge. The tooling department supports operations with quick, effective and usually simple tooling. Portable CNC controllers permit rapid adaptation and insure zero down time.

LAI delivers innovative solutions through its high-speed laser cutting systems.

  • Accuracy to ±0.0005 inches
  • Multiple-head systems with up to six heads cut parts faster
  • Five-axis laser trimming of complex three-dimensional parts
  • Six-axis rotary tube work center
  • Vision systems for exact registration and positioning

Laser Drilling

Our CNC-controlled Nd:YAG lasers can handle difficult laser drilling jobs with precision and efficiency. Laser's five-axis laser machining centers cut, weld and drill pre-formed, three-dimensional and rotary parts with accuracy and precision to meet your exacting standards. Our through-the-lens viewing produces exact feature location and placement.  The automatic focus control follows the contour of the part regardless of surface irregularities. The accuracy and versatility of laser technology goes to work to produce the parts you need, meeting your precise specifications and requirements. LAI offers advanced laser drilling of composites.

  • Angled, shaped holes
  • Angles from 10 to 90 degrees
  • Automatic focus control follow contour of part regardless of surface irregularities
  • Difficult-to-process materials and exotic metals
  • Holes drilled from 0.003 inches to 24 inches in diameter
  • Material thickness from films to 1 inch thick
  • Percussion, trepanning and fire-on-the-fly techniques for drilling effusion holes in pre-formed parts
  • Pre-formed parts processed with heights up to 24 inches and widths up to 48 inches
  • Rotary parts up to 48 inches diameter

Laser Heat-Treating

Laser heat treating allows metal to maintain ductility while improving the wear properties of specific areas. The laser transformation hardening process produces a fine martensite grain structure. Precise depth and coverage is controlled by PLC or CNC positioning techniques and beam integration and shaping. A surface coating is added to control and maintain beam absorption for consistent results.

LAI's two 5,000 watt CO2 lasers offer 0.080-inch thick case depths to Rc 60+ in medium carbon steels, such as 4140, achieving greater hardness and less distortion than induction heat treating processes. We can focus the beam between 1/4 inches and 1 inch wide to customize the process and selectively harden the wear surfaces.

LAI’s 5,000-watt CO2 lasers can selectively harden highly localized areas with virtually no heat distortion.

  • Hardness up to Rc65 in medium carbon steels
  • Case depth up to 0.060 inches

Laser Machining of Tubes and Pipes | Cylindrical Cutting

LAI offers high-speed laser machining of tubes and pipes. We can cut round or square tubing, from 0.020 inches to 24 inches diameter and to 20 feet in length. LAI has multiple tumblers for in-house parts finishing. We offer burr-free cutting, and our six-axis rotary tube center will automatically index and cut to length.

LAI cuts tubing of all shapes and sizes made from steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy and more.

  • Burr-free, oxide-free finishes
  • Tubing from 5/16 inches to 1 inch in diameter

Laser Welding

LAI helps evaluate the product concept and determine the best processing approach for laser welding. From research and development to materials and application analysis, prototype runs to production quantities, LAI laser welding is a natural choice.

LAI’s laser welding services offer high-yield strength with no heat distortion and now filler materials.

  • Spot sizes as small as 0.004 inches
  • Hermetic welds to a helium leak rate of 108

Benefits of laser welding:

  • Engineering assistance with weld joint design
  • Less heat distortion
  • Welding of dissimilar materials without a filler rod or preform
  • Less expensive than electron beam welding
